Baseball

Springboro 6, Fairfield 4

FAIRFIELD (TRO) — Springboro traveled to Fairfield on Thursday and emerged with a hard-fought 6-4 victory.

Springboro (3-1) jumped ahead in the top of the second inning, scoring two runs to answer Fairfield’s two-run first. The visitors added two more runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth and sixth innings to build a lead. Fairfield chipped away with a run in the fifth and another in the seventh but couldn’t close the gap.

Nick Hutchinson led the Springboro offense, going 2-for-3 with a towering home run and three RBIs. Evan King also had a strong day at the plate, collecting two hits and scoring two runs. Adam Smith contributed two RBIs with a single.

Dylan Brabston started on the mound for Springboro and pitched five solid innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out five. Jacob Rhinehart closed out the final two innings, surrendering one run on three hits and striking out one.

For Fairfield (1-2), Brayden Benge had a standout offensive performance, going 2-for-3 with a double and scoring two runs. Carson Candella also had two hits, including two doubles, and drove in a run. Billy Ramsey added an RBI single for the home team.

Brady Campbell pitched six innings for Fairfield, allowing six runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out one. Evan Hamilton pitched a scoreless final inning.

Franklin 12, Casey County 2

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (TRO) — The Franklin Wildcats dominated the Casey County Rebels on Thursday, earning a decisive 12-2 victory in high school baseball action.

Franklin (2-2) got off to a strong start, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning and adding two more in the second to take an early 4-0 lead. The Wildcats continued to build their lead with three runs in the third, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth, ending the game after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Junior Aiden Standifer led the offensive charge for Franklin, scoring three runs and driving in two RBIs on one hit. Sophomore Zach Beeson also had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two doubles. Junior Braylon Turner contributed with one hit, one run scored, and one RBI, while junior Liam Rebholz added a hit, a run, and an RBI, also stealing two bases.

Junior Talon Conrad pitched a solid five innings for Franklin, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out seven and walking three.

Badin 4, Tampa Catholic 3

TAMPA, Fla. (TRO) — The Badin Rams secured a narrow 4-3 victory over the Tampa Catholic Crusaders on Thursday.

Badin scored four runs on five hits, while the pitching staff held off a late Tampa Catholic rally.

Badin (2-2) took an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Senior Kade Bowling led off the game with a home run, and junior James Brink followed later in the inning with another solo shot. The Rams added a run in the third inning and another in the seventh to build a 4-0 advantage.

Tampa Catholic (16-5) mounted a comeback attempt in the later innings, scoring three runs. However, Badin’s pitching held strong to secure the one-run victory.

Bowling had a strong offensive performance for Badin, going 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, and one RBI. Brink also contributed significantly with a home run, one run scored, and one RBI. Junior Cade Cummins had a hit and scored a run, while junior Chandler Taylor added a double. Junior Austin Vangen recorded an RBI via a sacrifice fly.

The Badin pitching staff saw four different arms take the mound. Bowling started the game, pitching two-thirds of an inning and striking out one. Senior Max Kraemer followed with a scoreless inning, allowing two walks. Junior Carson Niehaus pitched the bulk of the game, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, striking out two, and walking three. Junior Nick Vess closed out the game, pitching two-thirds of an inning, allowing two walks and recording one strikeout.

Talawanda swept in Thursday doubleheader

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (TRO) — The Talawanda High School baseball team suffered two defeats on Thursday.

Game 1: LaRue County, KY 16, Talawanda 0 (4 innings)

LaRue County’s offense exploded in the second inning, scoring 13 runs en route to a 16-0 shutout victory over Talawanda in a game shortened to four innings due to the run rule. LaRue County tallied 13 hits while holding Talawanda to just two.

Seniors Connor Sayler and Eddie Tanner each recording the team’s only hits. The Talawanda offense struck out seven times and drew only one walk.

Junior Austin Puckett started on the mound for Talawanda, pitching three innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out four. Senior Kaiden Woodall pitched one inning, surrendering 13 runs (all earned) on eight hits and five walks.

Game 2: Holy Cross (Ky.) 9, Talawanda 8 (8 innings)

The second game of the doubleheader proved to be a much closer contest, with Holy Cross ultimately edging Talawanda 9-8 in eight innings.

Talawanda battled back from an early deficit but couldn’t secure the victory in the extra frame.

Talawanda’s offense produced 12 hits in the game. Junior Ty Davie and junior Jericho Fletcher each had two hits. Senior Ryan Wright drove in three runs on two hits, including a triple. Senior Nathaniel Iden also tripled and had an RBI. Junior Austin Puckett and senior Connor Sayler each added a hit and an RBI.

Talawanda used four pitchers in the nightcap. Senior Hunter Griffin started, followed by sophomore Brody Morris, sophomore Jack Stigall, and senior Ryan Wright. Stigall pitched the longest, going four innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out two. Wright took the loss, allowing five runs (all earned) on two hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings.

Cincy Trailblazers 11, Cincinnati Christian 5

WEST CHESTER TWP. (TRO) — The Trailblazers scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to break open a close game and defeat the Cincinnati Christian Cougars 11-5 on Thursday.

Cincinnati Christian took an early lead, but the Trailblazers chipped away before their late surge secured the victory.

Cincinnati Christian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and added a run in the third to take a 3-2 advantage. The Trailblazers responded with a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at 5-5 heading into the final frame.

The Trailblazers’ offense then erupted for five runs in the seventh, capitalizing on opportunities to pull away for the win.

For Cincinnati Christian, junior Peter Marsh had a standout offensive performance, going 3-for-3 with a double and one stolen base. Junior Alex Minacapelli also had two hits, including two RBIs and a stolen base. Senior Jonah Wilson contributed two hits, including a double, and scored a run. Senior Jackson Hanauer had one hit and one RBI, while senior Kael Starks had a triple.

Cincinnati Christian used five different pitchers. Junior Kolby Bosse started the game but lasted only one-third of an inning, allowing five runs (all earned) on two hits and three walks. Junior Seth Halsey pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up one earned run on three hits and two walks. Junior Peter Marsh threw three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Senior Kael Starks pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing one walk and striking out one. Senior Jonah Wilson pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, surrendering three earned runs on four hits and four walks.

Boys Volleyball

Mason d. Oak Hills 25-15, 25-21, 25-19

MASON, Ohio (TRO) — The Mason Comets defeated the Oak Hills Highlanders in a decisive 3-0 victory in boys high school volleyball action on Thursday. Mason (4-2) took all three sets, with scores of 25-15, 25-21, and 25-19.

Mason’s offense was led by senior Ryan Peppard, who recorded a team-high 8 kills. Sophomore Brian Miller added 7 kills, while senior Connor Lape chipped in with 6. Sophomore Tomas Amaya contributed 5 kills and led the team in service aces with 7.

Freshman Linas Binkis directed the offense with 17 assists, while junior Declan Mulvin added 13 assists. Sophomore Logan Zemberi led the Comets defensively with 5 digs and also contributed 2 service aces. Lape led Mason at the net with 3 blocks.

McNicholas d. Fenwick 20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-16

FRANKLIN, Ohio (TRO) — The McNicholas Rockets rallied after dropping the first set to secure a 3-1 victory over the Fenwick Falcons on Thursday.

Fenwick (4-5) took the opening set, but McNicholas responded by winning the next three to claim the match.

Fenwick’s offense was led by senior Jake Long, who recorded a team-high 9 kills. Junior Will Lenz added 5 kills and led the team in assists with 17. Senior Dempsey Ptaszkiewicz also contributed 6 kills, while junior Kian O’Connell had 5.
Defensively, Lenz led the Falcons with 13 digs, followed closely by senior Josh Sabin with 12 digs. Senior Hugh Lenz added 6 digs. At the net, O’Connell recorded a team-high 5 blocks, while Ptaszkiewicz added 4 blocks and Lenz had 3.
