Spat At and Cursed Out While Waiting for a Train, Couple Says Penn Station Officers Let the Man Walk Away Because They Didn’t See It Happen
NEW YORK, NEW YORK — A couple visiting New York says a stranger cursed at them and spat in their direction while they waited for a train at Penn Station, but what upset them most was what happened next: the man was allowed to walk away while officers told them to file a report.
The couple shared parts of the encounter on TikTok, sparking a heated debate over public safety and policing in one of the busiest transit hubs in the country.
How It Started
According to the couple, the man had been yelling inside one of the station’s shops. When he came out, he began walking “aggressively” toward them, even though they were simply waiting for their train.
They say he passed right in front of them and spat toward them.
Caught on Camera
The video shows a man dressed in black pants, a black top and a hoodie, appearing agitated and shouting as he moved through the station.
As he passed the couple, he yelled a vulgar word at them. The woman’s companion grabbed him by the hoodie and shouted back. The man pulled free but kept repeating the insult and made a lewd gesture at the couple.
He Ran Before Security Could Stop Him
The commotion drew station security, but the man ran off before anyone could stop him.
“He Needed to See It Himself”
When police officers arrived, they listened to the couple’s account and told them they could file a police report.
The couple asked why no one had stopped the man. According to them, an officer explained that he had to witness the violation personally before he could take action.
They also say officers told them the man had been reported before for harassing people, which the couple called “shameful.”
Others Say They Know This Man
Some viewers claimed they had run into the same man at the station. One said he is often around the area and had aggressively followed them until they hurried away. Another said situations like this are why they stopped going to the station altogether.
Anger Aimed at Police and Politicians
Most of the online criticism was directed at the police response, with comments calling the officers “jokes” and asking why people like this are allowed to roam free.
Others turned the conversation political, blaming Gov. Kathy Hochul and Democratic leaders for what they see as unsafe streets and subways.
The Couple’s Warning
In their caption, the couple urged anyone traveling through the area to stay alert and watch their surroundings. Police have not publicly commented on the incident.
