Royal Caribbean Reroutes Oasis of the Seas to Canada at the Last Minute, Leaving New York Family With 8-Month-Old Baby Turned Away at Boarding
NEW YORK — A New York family’s long-planned cruise vacation fell apart right before boarding, after Royal Caribbean changed the ship’s itinerary at the last minute and their 8-month-old daughter was suddenly no longer allowed to sail.
The mom, Maria, who posts on TikTok as @mariaaudhd, shared the emotional experience in a video that drew more than 224,000 views, 21,600 likes and over 1,600 comments.
A Mom Who Shares Her Neurodivergent Life Online
Maria was diagnosed as an adult with Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD, and her content focuses on life as a neurodivergent mom. She said she experienced an autistic meltdown as the situation unfolded at the terminal.
Oasis of the Seas Rerouted From the Bahamas to Nova Scotia
The family was booked on the October 18 sailing of Oasis of the Seas. The cruise was originally set to visit Florida and the Bahamas.
Because of severe weather developing off the East Coast, Royal Caribbean rerouted the ship north to Halifax, Nova Scotia, adding several extra days at sea.
Two Major Changes Learned Within Minutes
Maria said she learned about two huge changes within minutes of each other, even though the family had been planning the trip for months.
The first was the new destination. The family had just dropped off luggage packed for warm weather, with shorts, bathing suits and flip-flops, but no jackets for a trip to Canada.
Crew Says the Change Was Sent the Night Before
According to Maria, crew members told passengers the change had already been communicated. When she asked when, she was told it was sent around 10 p.m. the night before departure. Maria said she never received an email.
“You Guys Can’t Go Because She’s Under a Year Old”
Then came the bigger blow. A staff member asked how old her baby was. When Maria said 8 months, she was told the family could not sail because the new route included three international sea days.
She said she was handed a piece of paper with a phone number to call.
What Royal Caribbean’s Infant Policy Says
Royal Caribbean generally allows infants to sail from 6 months old. However, the cruise line requires children to be at least 12 months old on any itinerary with three or more consecutive sea days.
The rerouted trip included three straight sea days, meaning Maria’s daughter no longer qualified.
Other Families With Babies Turned Away Too
Maria said other families with infants were given the same news. Some who had seen the itinerary change said they were never told about the infant sailing rule.
Mom Calls Out the Cruise Line’s Autism-Friendly Claims
Maria criticized Royal Caribbean, saying the company promotes itself as autism-friendly but offered no support during her meltdown.
“Never Again,” Viewers Say
Many viewers blasted the cruise line. One person currently on a Royal Caribbean ship said, “Never again.” Another called the short notice for a completely different climate “completely unacceptable.”
Cruisers Share Similar Stories
Some said they remembered a similar situation a year earlier, when a Bermuda trip was changed to Canada and described as comparable. Another noted that itinerary changes are often allowed without notice, but said the under-one infant rule is a separate issue entirely.
Family Back Home With No Response Yet
The family returned home. In her latest updates, Maria said she had not heard back from Royal Caribbean.
