No Severe Storm Threat Expected Wednesday Into Thursday, but Thunderstorms Could Still Rumble Across the Upper Midwest, Texas and South Florida

UNITED STATES — The latest Day 3 outlook from the NOAA Storm Prediction Center shows no organized severe weather risk anywhere in the country from Wednesday morning, October 28, into Thursday morning, October 29. Still, a few pockets of general thunderstorms are expected to pop up in several regions.

The Outlook Window

The outlook was issued at 1:17 a.m. CDT on Monday, October 26, and covers the period from 7 a.m. CDT Wednesday, October 28, through 7 a.m. CDT Thursday, October 29. It was prepared by forecaster Leitman at the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

Where Thunderstorms Are Possible

None of the highlighted areas reach even the Level 1 (Marginal) severe category. Instead, they fall under the general thunderstorm label:

Region Areas Included
Upper Midwest Iowa, much of Minnesota and Wisconsin, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and a sliver of the Northern Plains
Far West Texas The western tip of Texas and the Big Bend area
South Texas Coastal and southern Texas near the Gulf
South Florida The southern tip of the Florida Peninsula and the Keys

Upper Midwest Sees the Largest Storm Area

The biggest thunderstorm zone stretches across Iowa, much of Minnesota and Wisconsin, and into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Residents there could hear thunder and see lightning with passing showers during the midweek period.

Texas and Florida Get Isolated Storms Too

Smaller pockets of storms are also possible in far West Texas, along the South Texas coast, and across South Florida, where warm, moist air remains in place.

What “General Thunderstorms” Means

A general thunderstorm area means storms are possible, but they are not expected to be severe. That means forecasters do not currently expect:

  • Damaging winds of 58 mph or more
  • Large hail an inch or bigger
  • Tornadoes

Even so, any thunderstorm can produce lightning, brief heavy rain and gusty winds.

Outlook Could Still Change

Because this is a Day 3 forecast, details may shift as Wednesday approaches. Updated outlooks in the coming days could adjust where storms develop.
