Fall Colors Begin Appearing Across Central and Northern Illinois With Peak Foliage Expected From Late October Into Early November

Illinois – Fall is starting to paint the landscape across Illinois. The latest fall foliage report shows that low color is now beginning to appear across central and northern Illinois. By next week, the entire state is expected to see at least some low color, with moderate color sneaking into the northern part of the state. The peak of the season looks to arrive during the last week of October into the first week of November.

Low Color Already Showing in Central and Northern Illinois

Across much of central and northern Illinois, trees are beginning to show their first hints of fall. Communities including the Quad Cities, Galesburg, Macomb, Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Champaign, Springfield, LaSalle, Joliet, Kankakee, and Pontiac are now in the low color stage, meaning a few trees are turning yellow, orange, or red, while most are still green.

Quincy, Lincoln, Taylorville, Charleston, and Effingham are also starting to see early color.

Southern Illinois Still Mostly Green

Farther south, much of southern Illinois remains in the little to no color stage. Areas around Carlinville, Vandalia, Olney, and the Metro East near St. Louis have yet to see noticeable color changes. Warm temperatures and long, mild days have kept many trees green longer in the southern part of the state.

Next Week: Low Color Statewide

By Tuesday, October 13, the foliage projection shows all of Illinois beginning to see at least low color. That includes southern cities like Mount Vernon, Marion, and Carbondale, which should begin showing the first signs of fall.

Meanwhile, moderate color is expected to spread across northern Illinois, including Galena, Rockford, Sterling, DeKalb, and the Chicago area. Areas closer to the Wisconsin border will likely see the most noticeable changes first.

Peak Color Expected Late October Into Early November

The peak of fall foliage across Illinois is expected to arrive during the last week of October into the first week of November. The projection for Saturday, October 31 shows peak color spreading across much of northern and central Illinois, including Galena, Rockford, Chicago, the Quad Cities, Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Champaign, and Springfield.

Southern Illinois is expected to be at high color by that time, including areas around St. Louis, Mount Vernon, Marion, and Carbondale, with peak color likely following shortly after.

What Makes Leaves Change Color?

Leaves change color in the fall as days get shorter and temperatures cool. Trees slow down production of chlorophyll, the green pigment that helps them make food from sunlight. As the green fades, other colors that were hidden in the leaves become visible, including yellows and oranges. Red and purple colors come from pigments that develop in the fall, especially when days are sunny and nights are cool.

The best fall colors usually happen when there are sunny days, cool but not freezing nights, and adequate moisture.

Weather Could Affect the Timing

The timing of peak color can shift depending on the weather. Warm temperatures can slow the color change, while cool nights can speed it up. A hard freeze or strong winds can cause leaves to drop early, cutting the season short. With warm weather in the forecast for parts of Illinois this week, some areas may see color develop a little more slowly before cooler air arrives.

Best Places to See Fall Colors in Illinois

Illinois offers plenty of great spots to enjoy fall foliage. In northern Illinois, Galena and the hills of Jo Daviess County are popular for scenic drives, while Starved Rock State Park near LaSalle offers beautiful views of colorful trees along the Illinois River canyons.

In central Illinois, the Illinois River Valley near Peoria provides stunning overlooks. Southern Illinois is home to the Shawnee National Forest, including the famous Garden of the Gods, which becomes a popular destination once peak color arrives in early November.

Plan Ahead for Weekend Trips

For anyone planning a fall foliage trip, the next few weekends will offer increasing color across the state. Late October looks like the best time to visit northern and central Illinois, while early November may be ideal for southern Illinois.

Visitors should check local foliage reports before heading out, since conditions can change quickly from week to week.
