Under new leadership, Fairfield hopes to lay foundation for a GMC title run

FAIRFIELD — Carl Woods sees the vast amount of talent that’s filtering through the Fairfield High School girls basketball system right now.

Entering his first year at the helm, Woods is expecting the Indians to get back on the map.

“We have a tremendous pipeline of younger talent where we have the potential of putting Fairfield back on the map for girls basketball,” said Woods, who takes over for David Loper after he led the Fairfield girls program the last 11 seasons.

The Indians went 7-15 overall and 6-9 a season ago.

“This season, we return a young, somewhat experienced squad,” Woods said.

Woods expressed excitement about having junior Myka Richardson back for a full season after she missed half of last year due to an injury. Richardson, who only played 10 games, led the team with 10.9 points, 2.8 steals and 1.7 assists a game.

Returning are seniors Kylee Booker and Breyel Kidd, along with junior Kimberlin Samples. Kidd scored 8.7 points and had 3.7 rebounds a game, while Booker averaged 6.4 points and 3.1 rebounds.

“We can score in a variety of ways and play a multitude of defenses,” Woods said. “We are laying the foundation now for a run at a GMC championship this season and for seasons to come.”

Woods said sophomores Lexi Hayes and Kayla McCoy will supply “young talent who can play at a high level. Looking forward to seeing how they mature on the court this season.”

Fairfield tips things off at home against Seton on Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Woods comes in with 10 years of high school coaching experience, entering his eighth as a head coach. Woods most recently served as the associate head coach for the Fairfield boys program, which captured back-to-back GMC conference titles and was regional runners-up last season.

Woods led the Cincinnati Christian boys basketball team prior to his stint at Fairfield. He has a winning pedigree of 123-54 as a head coach.
