Ross showing effort, energy as upcoming season begins

ROSS TWP. — David Lane isn’t all that concerned with how much determination his Ross High School boys basketball team is showing as the 2022-2023 season is set to begin.

He’s not worried about the hiccups, either. That’s because the sixth-year Rams coach knows his players’ mentality.

“I think the thing that stands out most with this team from our first few scrimmages is how extremely hard they play,” said Lane, whose squad went 12-11 overall and 6-4 in the Southwest Ohio Conference a year ago. “They get after it.

“We are young, so we know that there are going to be mistakes made,” Lane added. “But if they are making mistakes, they are going 100 miles per hour and competing every single time. I am extremely proud of the effort and energy from our guys thus far.”

Senior Kellen Reid is the only returning starter from a squad that fired a conference-best 36.5% from 3-point last season. Reid, who can score from anywhere on the court, fired 36.6% from behind the arc as a junior.

“He’s really the only player with a lot of varsity experience,” Lane said of Reid, who averaged 9.7 points and 3.2 rebounds a contest. “He is an athletic player that can score in all types of ways.”

Issac Nunn saw some playing time last year as a sophomore, averaging 3.0 points a game.

“(Nunn) is a smart player and will really help us get into the flow of everything,” Lane said. “He is a competitor and a gamer.”

Junior Riley Caldwell and sophomore Ben Voegele will look to hold it down on the defensive end, Lane said.

“(Caldwell) is extremely quick and athletic. He is a blur with the basketball and can be a lockdown defender,” Lane said. “(Voegele) can flat-out score with the ball and also has been really solid on the defensive end. He can make shots from anywhere on the floor.”

Rounding out the roster is senior forward Luke Fulmer, junior forward Logan Hammons, junior forward Keithen Castator, sophomore guard Will Schaefer, sophomore guard Daniel Fogt and sophomore guard Peyton Hendricks.

The Rams open up the season on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at home against Turpin at 7:30 p.m.
