Madison expects to challenge for a SWBL title

MADISON TWP. — The Madison High School girls basketball team is setting its sights on a Southwestern Buckeye League title in 2022-2023.

Mohawks coach Brian McGuire said that returning his top three scorers from last season could make it happen.

“Last year we were able to get some valuable experience for some of our younger players that will complement our top three returners,” said McGuire, who is entering his 11th year at the Madison helm.

The Mohawks are coming off a 10-13 overall, 6-7 SWBL performance a season ago.

“We expect to challenge for the league title this year, and because we have dropped down to Division III, to make a tournament run,” McGuire said.

Seniors Megan Phelps and Ella Campbell, along with junior Kylie Wells, are the Mohawks’ key returning starters.

Wells led the team in scoring last season with 12 points a game, and she brought down 7.5 rebounds. Campbell (10.1 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 2.6 apg) and Phelps (4.9 ppg) contributed as juniors.

McGuire said to keep an eye out for senior forward Kate Jett, junior guard Emily Webb, junior guard Riley Cockerham, junior guard Allyson Hudek and sophomore guard Malarie Bobbitt.

The Mohawks tip off the season on Friday at home against Dixie at 7:15 p.m.
